Name: | Josiah Cole |
---|
He would regret, for the rest of his life, his choice to examine it.
Woken by his horses, Josiah looked out his window, saw a veritable jungle had grown over his stables, and went out to investigate. Stepping through a gate to a strange and horrifying world, the big Irishman was immediately beset by all manner of creatures hell bent on killing him. At their hands, he very nearly died.
Then, it came for him. The Mind Flayer.
The creature was powerful, violent, and purely malevolent--and hollowed him out with precious little trouble. For an indeterminate time, but could only gauge to be years later on, he was the Mind Flayer's puppet, a servant meant to help him find his way into Josiah's world. He did not know why he'd been chosen or how, nor was he capable of caring in the Mind Flayer's thrall.
He was violated, enslaved, and alone...the victim of a fate worse than death.
But Josiah Cole had been alone nearly all his life. He had been nurtured by death, shaped by the constant reminder of his own mortality.
Unlike most men, in the presence of death...he was at his most alive.
And so Josiah Cole, emboldened by his own destruction, began to fight.
He couldn't say how he broke free of it--shook off its control and became Josiah again. He literally couldn't, because freedom came at a terrible cost. While he regained his sense of identity, ran from the Mind Flayer and lost himself in the realm that would one day be called the Upside Down, his own mind was shattered by the ordeal.
He gained power from having been its thrall, power that let him resist its assault to reclaim him. He gained still more, slaughtering the things that came for him--creatures it controlled, bottom feeders simply looking to make a meal of him. He did so, however, with little more than an animal's instinct to survive. He had no one to talk to, no one to help him piece together the shattered fragments of his psyche...he went mad for quite some time, and very gradually pieced together something resembling a man.
A wild, bloodthirsty, vicious man with almost no memory of where he came from or who he was...but a man all the same.
A man that, upon discovering another gate within the Upside Down, returns to a brand new century as something more than human...
